Christmas fun doesn't have to be expensive for children to have fun - and if you find a nice market for your "Food", you may even make a bit of money, too, helping others to have fun.
Little boys and girls look forward to Christmas all year long. They try their darnedest to be good, and try as they might, they don’t always succeed.
One good Santa's Elf came up with a way to entice reindeer to visit homes of ‘naughty’ boys and girls – Special Reindeer Food.
The secret recipe has been passed on down through the generations, from elf to elf, so no one gets left out.
If you’ve never made it, here’s how to make magic reindeer food so Santa will stop by your home whether you've been naughty or nice.
In actuality, it’s probably the other animals in your neighborhood that will be eating this treat. However, you don’t have to tell your children that; you can let them believe Santa’s reindeer stopped by.
Magic reindeer food has ingredients you can find in most homes. So where does the magic come in?
Children, not adults, have magic words to say over the mixture which will make it easy to find for the reindeer. Of course, the reindeer will float over the lawn so your children may not see any hoof prints.
What ingredients are needed to make magic reindeer food?
You’ll need the following items:
1/4 cup dry oats
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Red and green sugar sprinkles or cake glitter, as desired
Optional: Add sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds, 1/8 to 1/4 cup raisins or other dried fruit, add any dry flaked cereal.
Please use only food safe sprinkles, not craft glitter, which is pretty but harmful to birds and other wild life.
1. Mix your ingredients in a medium size bowl
and then pour it into a jar with a lid. Zip top bags are also a good choice. Your children will have fun helping you scoop out the ingredients and mix them up, too!
You want to keep your reindeer food fresh until Christmas Eve.
On Christmas Eve, before your children go to bed, they’ll need to recite the magic words:
"Sprinkle on the lawn at night
The moon will make it sparkle bright
As Santa’s reindeer fly and roam
Let this guide them to my home!"
Let your children place a glass of milk and cookies on the table near the Christmas tree. Then they can go outside, recite these words, and sprinkle the magic reindeer food on the lawn.
Your children can then go brush their teeth, get in their pajamas and have dreams of Santa’s impending visit!
Remember if you don't want the mess on your lawn, you can always have them leave it in a bowl - which you empty, leaving a few crumbs behind.
On Christmas morning, they will delight on rushing out to see if the reindeer food is gone. If your children are upset because all of the reindeer food isn’t gone in the morning, remind them that there may be many children leaving them treats. They may have gotten full by the time they reached your house. You can also tell them the reindeer like to share and decided to leave some for the other animals in your neighborhood.
Or make it funny and describe how reindeer have to eat without a knife and fork and sometimes spill their food! But, isn't that lucky for all the little birds and animals around who will eat up every little bit.
Children love animals, so teaching them how to make Magic Reindeer Food is a great Christmas activity. They can feel good about taking care of Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve. After all, the reindeer work just as hard as Santa does on Christmas Eve and he’s usually given a treat. Now they can provide a Yuletide treat for the reindeer and other animals in the area, as well.
Enjoy creating memories for your family during the holidays!
